A yad (Hebrew: יד, meaning “hand”; Yiddish: האַנט hant) is a Jewish ritual pointer, commonly known as a Torah pointer, used during Torah readings to follow the text without touching the parchment scrolls. This practice prevents ritual impurity and protects the fragile parchment, which can be damaged by handling. Although not mandatory, the yad is frequently used and is considered a hidur mitzvah, or "embellishment of the commandment." It can be crafted from various materials, with silver being popular, especially for its decorative crown. Typically, a yad resembles a long rod topped with a small hand and an extended index finger. Some may even have a fabric covering.
