Hand Made Silver(ST925) Dreidel
A dreidel is a four-sided spinning top used during Hanukkah, featuring letters from the Hebrew alphabet: נ (nun), ג (gimel), ה (hei), and ש (shin). In Yiddish, these letters represent the rules of a gambling game played with the dreidel: Nun means “nothing,” Gimel means “all,” Hei means “half,” and Shin means “put in.”
These letters also refer to the Hebrew phrase "nes gadol haya sham," meaning "a great miracle happened there," related to the miracle of the oil. In Israel, the letter Shin is often replaced by פ (pe) to say "nes gadol hayah poh," or "a great miracle happened here." Some Haredi communities still prefer Shin, as it connects to the Holy Temple.
While spinning the dreidel is not an obligatory mitzvah for Hanukkah—where the main practices are lighting candles and reciting Hallel—it remains a beloved tradition of the holiday. during the holiday.
