Canaan is a region primarily centered on Palestine, inhabited originally by the Canaanites. The names "Canaan" and "Canaanite" appear in writings from around the 15th century BCE, including the Old Testament. "Canaan" can refer to all of Palestine and Syria, just the land west of the Jordan River, or a coastal strip from Acre (ʿAkko) southward.
