Canaan is historically and biblically recognized as centered around Palestine. The original inhabitants, the Canaanites, appear in writings from the 15th century BCE and in the Old Testament. "Canaan" refers to the area including all of Palestine and parts of Syria, sometimes specifically the land west of the Jordan River or a coastal strip from Acre (ʿAkko) southward.
