The original inhabitants were the Canaanites, with the names "Canaan" and "Canaanite" appearing around the 15th century BCE in the Old Testament. "Canaan" can refer to all of Palestine and Syria, just the land west of the Jordan River, or a coastal strip from Acre (ʿAkko) southward.
